Generalić Ivan (Croatia)

1914-1992

Generalić Ivan - Fishermen   He was born in Hlebine in 1914. He began doing painting in 1929. Besides drawing and watercolour, Ivan Generalić did paintings in oil on wood, then adopted and developed to perfection the technique of tempera and oil on glass. From social subject matters in his early period, he gradually turned to presentation of idyllic, beech-forest landscapes with the scenes from life in the villages in the Drava region and still lifes, while in the eighth decade of the twentieth century he did symbolical and existential matters (self-portraits and masks).    The simplicity of forms, clarity of drawing, specific perspective and spatial solutions, delicateness of nuances, then changes in size of certain forms until monumental, monochrome colouring and reduction of forms to drawn silhouettes on neutral background are basic characteristics of the oeuvre of one of the founders of Hlebine Group who announced naïve art in the former Yugoslav region.
